Least Prepona

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with a central iridescent greenish-blue band running from costa to dorsum on the forewings and from below to the costa to above the dorsum on the hindwings. In males, the band runs from mid to dorsum on the forewings. The hindwings in both males and females have a whitish patch at the costa, in line with the central band. Additionally, the hindwings have a black tornal ocellus with blue pupil and yellow outline, and two tiny tornal white spots. In males, the tornal ocellus is less visible as the yellow outline is faint. The underside of the wings is light brown from mid to base and dark brown for the rest of the wings, with black markings. The dark brown region of the forewings has two wavy black lines that end at the cell above the dorsum as broad black smudges. The light brown region of the forewings has a short wavy black line and two black spots. The light brown region of the hindwings has a broken wavy black line and some black markings. Additionally, the hindwings have two black ocelli, each with a white pupil, blue iris and yellow outline. One ocellus is located near the apex and the other is at the tornus.
