Menelaus Morpho

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with an iridescent blue tint in males, except at the costa, apex and termenal submargin of the forewings and the costa, dorsum and termenal margin of the hindwings. The iridescent blue tint is dull and less extensive in females, occurring from mid to base and with a white marking above it on the forewings. Females also have white submarginal spots. Both males and females have a white subapical marking. The underside of the wings is dark brown with alternating dark brown and orangish-brown submarginal lines. The forewings have three black ocelli, each with a white pupil and an orangish-brown outline followed by thin dark brown and greenish-white outlines. The hindwings have four black ocelli, each with a white pupil and an orangish-brown outline followed by thin dark brown and greenish-white outlines. One of the ocelli on the hindwings occurs close to the costa, while the remaining three occur from mid to dorsum in a row. The forewings have an iridescent greenish-yellow marking at mid-costa, and the hindwings have iridescent greenish-yellow markings on the inner side of the each ocellus.
