Common Morpho

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with a vertical iridescent blue band (dull and less extensive in females) at the centre of the forewings and at the postdiscal region of the hindwings. There is a bit of white at the top of the band on the forewings. The forewings also have submarginal white spots. The underside of the wings is also dark brown with alternating white and yellow submarginal bands and lines. The forewings have a whitish wavy band starting at mid-costa and ending at the tornus. The forewings have two black ocelli on the outer side of the whitish band,  each with a white pupil and a yellow outline followed by a thin dark brown outline. The hindwings have four black ocelli, each with a white pupil and a yellow outline followed by thin dark brown and greenish-white outlines. One of the ocelli on the hindwings is slightly larger than the others and occurs close to the costa, while the remaining three occur from mid to dorsum in a row and share the outer greenish-white outline.
