American snout

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with two orange bands on the forewings and one orange band on the hindwings. There are six white markings on the upper outer postdiscal and subapical regions of the forewings. The underside of the wings is mostly a blotchy brown, with the orange bands on the forewings visible (and one brighter) on the underside. The white markings are also visible on the underside of the forewings, with the area where they are located being dark brown. The body is dark brown on the upperside and blotchy brown on the underside. As the common name suggests, this butterfly has an elongated snout-like mouthpart (or labial palpi).
