Tropical buckeye

Wing span:

Identification: The hindwings are brown on the upperside with two black ocelli in the submarginal and outer postdiscal regions, each with a thick yellowish-brown outline followed by a thin dark brown outline. The forewings have four black ocelli, three in the submarginal region and one in the outer postdiscal region. The submarginal ocelli share one brown outline, while the outer postdiscal ocellus has a brown outline and a purplish-brown pupil. There is a wavy dark brown submarginal line followed by a straight dark brown line, both of which extend from apex to tornus. The forewings have two short orange bands (each with a dark brown outline) below the costa near the base, as well as a faint purplish band at mid-costa. The hindwings have a central iridescent blue patch. The underside of the wings is brown, with two ocelli visible on the forewings and four ocelli on the hindwings (two smaller additional ocelli in between the two that appear on the upperside).
