Dingy purplewing

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with a purplish-blue iridescent tint except at the margins and submargins, and five white spots on the forewings. The underside of the wings has a blotchy appearance with a mix of dark brown, light brown and white. The centre of the forewings is mostly dark brown and the remaining areas are a lighter shade of brown. The forewings also have a dark brown postbasal spot and four dark brown apical markings. The hindwings have a postdiscal band (with a wavy dark brown outline) with a double black ocellus near the apex and two black ocelli near the tornus. Each ocellus has a yellowish-brown iris and dark brown outline. The ocellus nearest the apex has a whitish pupil. The body is dark brown on the upperside and light brown on the underside.
