Carias purplewing

Wing span:

Identification: Males are dark brown on the upperside with no distinct markings on the wings. Females are also dark brown on the upperside, but have a white band located in the outer postdiscal region of the forewings. The underside of the wings in both males and females is a mixture of dark brown and orangish-brown. The margins and submargins of the forewings are orangish-brown while the remainder of the forewings is dark brown. The apex and subapex of the forewings have a white blotchy patch. The underside of the hindwings has a postdiscal band containing a double black ocellus near the apex and three black ocelli near the tornus, each with an orangish-brown outline. Each ocellus near the apex has a whitish pupil, as well as the middle ocellus of the three near the tornus.
