Blue-stitched eighty-eight

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with bright red bases (more extensive on forewings) and dark blue margins at the termen. The forewings have a central oblique bright red band. The red markings on the upperside of the forewings are also present on the underside (but not on the hindwings). The underside of the wings is dark brown. The forewings have a yellow subapical band and light iridescent blue submargin from the apex to a bit past midway of the termen. The hindwings have a yellow line at the submargin running from the apex to the end of the termen. There is also a yellow line running from the base of the costa to the dorsum, and almost joins the termenal submargin line. A broken light iridescent blue line runs from the space (at the dorsum) between the two yellow lines to the costa, on the inner side of the termenal submargin line. Between the broken light iridescent blue line and the inner yellow line, there is a horizontal yellow marking with one spot above it and two below it (both light iridescent blue in colour). The yellow marking and spots are outlined by a yellow irregular circle, and together look like the number eight. The body is dark brown and has yellow markings on the underside, especially on the abdomen.
