Gulf fritillary

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are orange on the upperside with dark brown markings. The forewings have dark brown horizontal submarginal stripes at the apex, subapex and termen, as well as a dark brown horizontal wavy stripe running from the costa to a submarginal stripe occurring at mid-termen. There are some dark brown spots on the inner side of the wavy stripe, some of which have a white centre. The hindwings have two dark brown spots in the postdiscal region, and dark brown submarginal circles. The underside of the forewings is orange, excepting the apex, subapex and upper postdiscal region all of which are brownish-gold with white markings. The dark brown wavy stripe and dark brown spots are also visible on the underside. The hindwings are entirely brownish-gold on the underside with white spots, including white submarginal spots.
