Variable hairstreak

Wing span:

Identification: Males are bright iridescent blue on the upperside with dark brown margins and submargins (except for the dorsal margin of the forewings, which is iridescent blue). The forewings have a dark patch below the costa. Females have less and paler iridescent blue from mid to base to dorsum on the forewings and centrally (to the base) on the hindwings. Also, females do not have a dark brown patch below the costa of the forewings. The hindwings have two tail-like projections near the tornus (one hair-like and one stub-like), brown cilia and a bit of iridescent blue at the tornus. The underside of the wings is brown. The forewings is light brown on the underside from mid to margin and there is a faint brown line at the postdiscal and submarginal transition. There is also a dark brown and white line running vertically from mid to costa, at the transition from brown to light brown. The forewings have a bit of red at the base at the costa. The hindwings have two dark brown and white wavy postdiscal lines, a black postbasal spot with white outline, and two orange-crowned black tornal ocelli.
