Bates' hairstreak

Wing span:

Identification: The wings are dark brown on the upperside with white fringe. The forewings have an iridescent blue tint from mid to base; this occurs from subapex to base in males. The hindwings have an iridescent blue tint except at the margins and submargins. The hindwings also have two tail-like projections near the tornus. The underside of the wings is iridescent lime green, except from mid to dorsum of the forewings which is light brown in females and covered in a pale bluish tint in males. The termenal margins on the underside are dark brown and bordered by white on either side. The forewings have one distinct dark brown and white band and a faint dark brown band on the outer side of the distinct band. The hindwings have a broad central oblique band consisting of the following moving from base to termen: a thin dark brown line, a broader white line, a slightly broader dark brown band, a very thin white line, a broad red band (this band appears as a darker red in males), and a white outer edge that is not very defined. The hindwings have a black tornal ocellus that appears bright red on the upperside, and larger in females. The body is iridescent blue on the upperside and iridescent lime green on the underside.
