Gold-spotted Aguna

Wing span: 3.8–5.6 cm (Lotts & Naberhaus, 2017)

Identification: Dark brown on the upperside with eight transparent light yellow spots on the forewings - four are equal in size and together form a slanted central band, one is found outside of this band, and the remaining three (smaller) occur near the apex. The same pattern is found on the underside of the forewings, along with a grey margin. The margin of the hindwings is also grey. In addition, there is a central white band that has teeth-like outer edges and a small brown spot (Hewitson, 1877).

Variation: The width of the central white band on the underside of the hindwings may vary considerably from one specimen to the next (Hewitson, 1877).

Behaviour: Adults like to rest on the underside of leaves (Lotts & Naberhaus, 2017)

Habitat:

Larval food plant: Leguminous plants including species of Bauhinia (Lotts & Naberhaus, 2017) such as Bauhinia ungulata (Warren et al., 2013)

Adult food: Flower nectar (Lotts & Naberhaus, 2017) of species of Ageratum and Lantana
